Twin Cities Metro: A lot can happen over the course of a year. With 83,763 establishments supplying well over 1.7 million jobs, a lot certainly has happened within the Twin Cities Metro Area’s economy in the past 12 months. DEED’s Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program sheds light on how metro industries are shifting over time, in terms of establishments, employment, total payroll, and average weekly wages.
Central Minnesota: It’s a seller’s market for job seekers in Central Minnesota looking to ‘sell’ their skill set to employers. October’s unemployment rate edged down to 2.2 percent from 2.5 percent a year ago, and the latest data on job openings show 41 percent more than the year prior.
Northeast Minnesota: Home to most of the state’s forest land, it is not surprising that almost half of the state’s employment in forestry and logging is located in the seven-county Northeast Minnesota region. These forestry businesses are facing intense competition for workers, and high school graduates and other job seekers will be needed to step into the boots of the current seasoned workforce.
Northwest Minnesota: As reported in previous blog posts, Northwest Minnesota has become more racially diverse over time, leading to a growing population and labor force. While the region is still relatively non-diverse, the number of jobs held by workers of races other than white was growing rapidly. Despite comprising just 7 percent of all jobholders, workers of other races accounted for 39 percent of the new jobs added in the region from 2012 to 2017.
Southeast Minnesota: Southeast Minnesota has experienced a surge in the number of job vacancies over the last year, with the fourth quarter of 2017 and second quarter of 2018 seeing the second and third highest number of vacancies ever posted since the start of the Job Vacancy Survey in 2001. The most recent survey results showed there were 9,641 vacancies in the Southeast region.
Southwest Minnesota: Highlighted by Black Friday and Cyber Monday, retail wasn’t just offering a huge number of deals this season; retailers were also providing a huge number of jobs. Retail Trade employers in Southwest Minnesota have reported over 20,000 employees in each of the past two years, and more than 2,000 job vacancies in 2018, easily the highest number on record.
