Solar panel maker Heliene is investing more than $18 million to get a 25,000-square-foot factory up and running in Mountain Iron, after another manufacturer abandoned it last year.
Earlier this year the state of Minnesota authorized $3.5 million in loans to expand the facility and purchase state-of-the-art equipment. Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation funded half of the loan, DEED the other half.

Minnesota's low unemployment rate and other job measures can be called signs that a long-predicted demographic squeeze now has the state's economy in its grip. But as DEED has stressed, the labor supply has not run dry yet — not while the unemployment rate among black and Hispanic Minnesotans is still twice as high as white unemployment.
Minnesota-based gene-editing firm Calyxt has found a market for its new, healthier type of soybean, announcing a deal with a soybean processor in Iowa. The agreement with American Natural Processors, a non-GMO processor of oils, flours and meals based in Cherokee, Iowa, means that products made with Calyxt’s high-tech soybeans could start hitting the market this year or by early 2019.
Calyxt was approved for a $477,000 grant from DEED's Job Creation Fund in 2016 to build a new headquarters in Roseville.
Minnesota Manufacturing Week
This week is Minnesota Manufacturing Week, an annual event that celebrates one of the state's most important industries. Manufacturers employ more than 326,000 people in Minnesota, accounting for roughly 1 in 9 jobs. A number of events are planned during the week, including tours at manufacturing facilities around the state. Gov. Dayton recently signed a Minnesota Manufacturing Week proclamation, noting workers in the sector took home $21 billion in wages last year. Read more details about Minnesota Manufacturing Week.
