Canadian Company Reboots Minnesota Solar Panel Factory

A Canadian company is restarting production in a once shuttered northern Minnesota solar panel manufacturing plant.

Ontario-based Heliene Inc. has begun operations in a 25,000-square-foot factory in Mountain Iron. It plans to hire 130 employees by September.

The plant will be retooled with the help of a $3.5 million state loan package from DEED and Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation.

More than 80 veterans visited the Duluth WorkForce Center last Wednesday for the third annual veterans career fair. This year’s event attracted more than 30 local companies with job openings.

"Events like this just gives those veterans the chance to get face-to-face with the decision makers,” said Tim Trumbull, DEED veterans' employment representative in Duluth.

The state of Minnesota was named one of America’s Best Large Employers for 2018 in a Forbes magazine analysis. 

The Forbes rankings are based on anonymous surveys of 30,000 working Americans. Participants were asked to rate how likely they are to recommend their employer to others, and to nominate employers other than their own.

Minneapolis has the highest concentration of seniors in the workforce of any city in the country, according  to an analysis by the U.S. Census Bureau. The study found that 22 percent of Minneapolis residents over the age of 65 were working or looking for work. St. Paul ranked fifth in the analysis. The Census Bureau said, in general, U.S. seniors are putting off retirement and staying in the workforce longer.
