Quick Reference: 800 West Broadway

The 800 West Broadway project grew out of the ongoing effort of DEED to relocate the North Minneapolis WorkForce Center to a location that:

  • better serves customers,
  • provides an enhanced customer environment, and
  • leverages a long-term lease to attract complementary co-tenants and retail.

The overall goals of the project will:

  • help build the local economy,
  • improve individual independence and prosperity,
  • enhance community wealth, and
  • create a vibrant neighborhood asset.

DEED launched a community engagement process to ensure that the project reflected the interests of community residents and customers. A volunteer-based community advisory council was established.

CAPI, CLUES, Lao Assistance Center, Minneapolis Urban League, North Side Residents Redevelopment Council (NRRC), and Somali Success School conducted outreach and gathered input from more than 500 residents from major representative communities and geographic areas of project impact.

Dozens of small neighborhood-based community meetings were held between 2012-2014.

Many organizations participated in meetings, including the City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minneapolis Urban League, Northside Residents Redevelopment Council, West Broadway Business Association, Minneapolis Neighborhood Councils, NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center, and MCTC.

Key leaders who participated in various discussions include Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges, MInneapolis City Council President Barb Johnson, Hennepin County Commissioner Linda Higgins, Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin, State Sen. Bobby Jo Champion, State Rep. Ray Dehn, West Broadway Business Association President Jackie Cherryholms, and Minneapolis Workforce Council Chair Carolyn Roby.
