One of the most popular spaces in the State Law Library is the Marvin R. Anderson Special Collections Room. This room contains our most unique, rare, old, and fragile library materials. We have legal resources on a variety of legal topics from around the world, but our most prized possessions are pieces of Minnesota legal history, including the Roll of Attorneys, career books prepared by former Supreme Court Justices, and handwritten briefs and court rules.
Because of the precious nature of the materials, access to these resources was limited even before the pandemic caused changes in library services. However, we are delighted to offer a virtual tour of the Special Collections Room. This virtual tour provides the history of the room, background on some of the room's most unique and interesting items, and pages on the collections preserved in the room.
If you want to see more treasures from the Special Collections Room, check out our Facebook page for our weekly Throwback Thursday posts.

In our May 2021 issue, we shared that we started a series of videos to help people representing themselves navigate the appeals process. In the year since that post, we have added three more videos:
|
Combined with our two appeals self-help clinics, we hope these videos make it a little easier for people representing themselves to understand the process and handle their own appeals.
The response to these videos has been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, the State Law Library recently received the Excellence in Community Engagement Award from the American Association of Law Libraries for the video series. We will be adding videos on additional topics in the coming months, so stay tuned for updates!
Our reference desk handles many requests for appellate briefs. An appellate brief is the written argument presented by the parties to the judges or justices hearing their case. They can be a terrific resource to see how attorneys have argued a subject, to find case law and other legal resources related to a topic, or simply to use as a guide or template for preparing your own brief.
You may already know that the State Law Library is your go-to destination for Minnesota Court of Appeals and Supreme Court briefs. We maintain print copies of published briefs dating back to the 1860s, we have briefs going back to the 1980s on microfiche, and we have an online archive of briefs for published cases decided from 2002 to the present. We regularly add new briefs to the online archive, including cases requested by attorneys and parties. If you are looking for a case not available in our archive, contact the reference desk for your options to access the brief: (651) 297-7651 or via email.
As a reminder, the State Law Library is closed on all court holidays. We will be closed Monday, May 30, 2022 for Memorial Day and Monday, July 4, 2022 for Independence Day.
