Welcome to the new MSLL Newsletter!

Welcome to the first issue of Inter Alia, the Minnesota State Law Library Newsletter! In this newsletter, you will find information about our services, news, and events. We will also share helpful resources, tips, and tricks to make your legal research easier.

Outreach to Public Libraries

In March 2017, the State Law Library launched a new partnership with the Saint Paul Public Library. Each month, reference librarians from the State Law Library visit different branches to provide legal information reference to the public. The pilot program includes the George Latimer Central Library, Arlington Hills, Highland Park, Rondo, and Sun Ray branches. The librarians are able to provide legal information and offer referrals. In the first two months of the program, our librarians have answered 54 questions on a variety of legal topics, including estate planning, criminal law, family law, bankruptcy, and immigration. Find us at the Saint Paul Public Library!

Asian Pacific Legal Experience Exhibit

Asian Pacific Legal Experience

In April 2017, the State Law Library was fortunate to host the Asian Pacific Legal Experience, a traveling exhibition on the Asian Pacific legal experience in America discerned through three pivotal events: the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the Japanese Incarceration in World War II, and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. As part of the exhibit, the State Law Library offered a special screening of the documentary "Of Civil Wrongs and Rights: The Fred Korematsu Story" on April 4, 2017. U.S. Magistrate Judge Tony N. Leung hosted the screening and offered attendees additional insight into the creation of the exhibit. The Library is also hosting two display cases of books and artifacts from our own collection as well as those generously loaned from members of the community. The cases will remain on display for several more weeks. Interested in learning more? Visit our companion guide for the exhibit.

Resource Spotlight: Pirsig on Pleading

Pirsig on Minnesota Pleading is an often overlooked gem in our collection. It provides a comprehensive overview of pleading under the Minnesota Rules of Civil Procedure, including history, general principles, and background discussion of relevant statutes, rules, and cases. The most useful feature of Pirsig for practitioners and self-represented parties alike is the collection of sample pleadings for a wide variety of actions. Pirsig has samples for routine causes of action, as well as ones that are slightly more ... specific and unusual. Looking for a Complaint for Negligence? You can select from options such as Negligence for Premises Liability, Slip and Fall, Falling Snow From Roof, Negligent Operation of a Bus, and more. Whether you need an answer with a counterclaim or a defense of failure to attempt to put out a fire, Pirsig has you covered.

Pirsig on Minnesota Pleading is available in our Getting Started collection. Visit us or Ask a Librarian to find this great resource.
