Minnesota's Response to the Opioid Epidemic - Overdose Prevention Centers

Monday, July 10th, 2023 ~ 11:00am - 12:00pm

Eventbrite

Minnesota has become the 2nd state to officially support overdose prevention centers - learn what that will look like and how it may impact those we care about and support in the community:

Emily Kaltenbach - Senior Director of Criminal Legal and Policing Reform.  In that role, she leads efforts to decriminalize drugs, divest from punitive police responses and build health-based alternatives. Emily previously worked in DPA’s New Mexico Policy Office where she was instrumental in passing marijuana legalization, reforming the state’s asset forfeiture law, a model for the rest of the country, and helping start the second law enforcement assisted diversion program in the nation. Before joining DPA she worked in New Mexico implementing rural community-based health centers, helping reform the state’s long-term care system, and setting the stage to implement federal health care reform in the state. Born and raised in rural New Mexico, she graduated from Beloit College with a BA in sociology and a minor in health care studies. She later completed a master’s degree in health administration at the University of Washington’s School of Public Health.

Beginning July 1, 2023, phone calls from MN State Correctional Facilities will be free to incarcerated populations.  There will be no charge to the incarcerated individual, family, or friends.

The MN DOC advocated for this change at the Minnesota Legislature because we know the cost of phone calls can be prohibitive, and we also know that those who are incarcerated experience better outcomes when they have strong connections on the outside. Simply, providing free phone calls creates greater accessibility to support systems and we look forward to this change on July 1st.

MINNESOTA BECOMES 2nd STATE TO OFFICIALLY SUPPORT OVERDOSE PREVENTION CENTERS!

Governor Tim Walz signed Senate File 2934, the Human Services budget proposal. The proposal includes language mandating the Minnesota Commissioner of Human Services to “establish safe recovery sites that offer harm reductions services and supplies, including but not limited to safe injection spaces.” The proposal also includes more than $14 million in one-time funding, to be dispersed annually until 2029, for start-up and capacity-building grants to establish safe recovery sites. This funding was also included in the Governor’s biennial budget recommendations to the Minnesota Legislature.
