What is the purpose of marking my private utilities?

If CenterPoint Energy customers receive a door tag or postcard prior to a construction project, they are asked to mark their private utilities. This is to ensure that CenterPoint Energy crews can recognize customers’ private utilities during construction. CenterPoint Energy is not liable for damage to unmarked private utilities.

How do I mark my private utilities?

Customers can mark their privately-installed utilities in one of a few ways. For example, for customers who own sprinkler systems, they should mark the sprinkler heads:

  • Using marking paint to spray-paint a circle around sprinkler heads or private utilities
  • Placing private utility flags around sprinkler heads or other private utilities
  • Writing the name of the utility, such as “sprinkler” or “dog fence,” on the private utility flag

Below is a list of the few examples of private utilities:

  • Sprinklers
  • Invisible dog fences
  • Drain tiles
  • Private wells
  • Septic tanks and lines

CenterPoint Energy is not liable for damages to unmarked lines. Please notify the crew prior to construction. For example, when a CenterPoint Energy crew is on your street, you may notify them in person of any private utilities you have. We appreciate your cooperation.
