Hello Chanhassen Residents,
On Monday, we began our City Council meeting with a moment of silence in remembrance of Speaker Emeritus Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and to honor all of those impacted by the tragic events of the previous Saturday. I had previously released a statement on behalf of our City Council and again expressed our heartfelt condolences.
City Council Action
We reviewed the site plan and approved the preliminary plat for apartments at the Avienda Development. It will be a four-story, 412-unit building with studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. The site also includes two pet parks, one each on the north and south ends of the property. At the center of the proposed building is an approximately 2.5-acre private courtyard containing a pool and spa, putting greens, open green space, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, lounge areas, garden and paths. One path, which will be open to the public, runs about ¾ of a mile and encircles the building. Please click here to learn more about the development.
Members of the MnDOT team presented an overview of the Highway 7 Corridor Study, including various redesign alternatives for the stretch between Hopkins Crossroad and the western Hennepin County line in St. Bonifacius. With safety being a high priority, council members provided feedback on the overall corridor.
We had our first 2026 budget and levy conversation. This begins a six-month process that includes public input, staff recommendations and ongoing discussion that helps inform the council’s final levy decision in December 2025. As we move through the process, I will keep you updated.
Road Projects, Developments and Various Agencies
We understand that it can be challenging to decipher who is managing the different road projects in and around our city or who has oversight on various developments. We welcome the questions and are always willing to direct our residents to the right resource. We are fortunate to have strong relationships with the different units of government within Carver County. However, it is important to note that, if it is outside of our jurisdiction, we have no oversight authority. In some cases—such as joint road projects—we collaborate as partners. However, for developments in other jurisdictions, the city does not have the authority to hold public hearings or alter plans. We respect the autonomy of each jurisdiction.
Fourth of July Celebration
As we head into the holiday week, I would like to extend my appreciation for the incredible planning and preparation done by our Parks and Public Works departments, the support of our Fire Department and Carver County Sheriff’s Office; the Rotary Club of Chanhassen; and all the sponsors who help make the Fourth of July celebration a success. I hope to see you at the events!
Finally, thank you to our Armed Forces—to those who are serving and to those who have served—so that we can celebrate this nation’s freedoms. I love our country and do believe that we live in the best country in the world, so may God bless the United States of America.
Happy Fourth of July!
Warmest regards, Elise Ryan eryan@chanhassenmn.gov
