Dear Chanhassen Residents,
I hope that you are as excited as I am as we kick-off the weekend before the 4th of July! Our city staff and community partners have been working tirelessly to bring you the 40th Annual Chanhassen 4th of July Celebration. With a multitude of events for every age, we hope you can find time to come celebrate with us! Please visit our 4th of July page for a list of events.
This morning, our community celebration was featured on Fox 9. Check it out below:

Café Zupas
On Monday night, the City Council voted to table the proposal for Café Zupas, planned to be located in the southwest corner of the Lunds & Byerlys parking lot. I asked Council to support temporarily pausing while we complete our review of land use ordinances and our downtown design guidelines. This action allows for a short-term moratorium to finish the work Council had asked staff to begin ensuring consistency as we begin redevelopment of our downtown with a new civic campus, the sale of the movie theater and other parcels of land that have redevelopment opportunities. City Council’s goal is to create a true “main street” feel along West 78th encouraging safe pedestrian walkability through the core of our downtown.
We remain in close contact with Café Zupas as we are excited about this potential new restaurant, but we must ensure this development fits with the vision for the exciting future of Chanhassen’s downtown business district. Now is the time to get it right.
This item will come back before City Council on July 17.
Odds & Ends
Civic Campus: City Council, staff, BKV Group Architects, and HKGi Group Inc. are working on the designs for the new City Hall and Civic Campus. We are in the early stages of design but will share more as details begin to emerge. Learn more about the Civic Campus online!
Chanhassen Bluffs Sports Complex: With the approval from the legislature to hold a referendum for a Local Option Sales Tax in November of 2024, City Council continues to refine the design based on feedback received from our Parks Task Force and Athletic Associations. We will be reviewing approximate construction costs in the months ahead and then begin community outreach this fall. For more information about the Chanhassen Bluffs Sports Complex, visit the city's website.
Lake Ann Park Preserve: City staff is working with engineering consultants on testing the soils for boardwalk and bridge installation, fine-tuning trail alignment, and completing design in preparation for bidding in the fall and construction this winter. Learn more about the Lake Ann Park Preserve online!
Wishing you a safe and happy 4th of July. It is a wonderful time to be with family, friends, and neighbors as we celebrate our nation’s independence. With deep gratitude and thanks to our military men and women who have served or continue to serve our great nation.
