Save the Date: BWSR Spring Training
BWSR staff will offer a new training opportunity for LGU staff – BWSR Spring Training – on March 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. This training is free to attend and will be held online via WebEx. Participants can choose from several concurrent sessions. Keep an eye out for final details about the training schedule via email and in the March edition of Train Tracks.
Working in Teams
Working as part of a team is an essential professional skill, whether that work takes place in or outside the office. “The Wisdom of Teams” by Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith, shares elements of good teamwork, including the following.
Good communication, which includes:
- Constructive listening: Constructive listening includes listening without interrupting the person speaking, avoiding criticism, and giving your undivided attention to the speaker.
- Giving the benefit of the doubt to others.
Team norms, which includes:
- Identifying specific performance goals: Performance goals are the objectives for your work. These are ways to measure if you are making progress. These should be shared with all team members, so everyone is on the same page and understands the purpose of the team.
- Holding each other mutually accountable for achieving specific performance goals.

2021 Conservation Planning Course
This year’s conservation planning course will take place beginning in July and will predominantly be held virtually. Final details for this course are still being developed and updates will be provided in the future. In the meantime, we are putting together a list of interested participants. If you are interested in attending the Conservation Planning Course this summer, please register here.
Course attendees are required to be Level I (formerly Apprentice) Conservation Planners before attending, and it is expected that those attending this course will complete the additional requirements to become Level III (formerly Certified) Conservation Planners. The Level I Conservation Planner requirements can be found here. Many of these requirements are self-paced trainings through NRCS’s training system, called AgLearn. If you don’t already have an account AgLearn you can find instructions on requesting access here.
In addition to being a Level I Conservation Planner, all attendees need to complete the Core Competency modules before attending. More information on these trainings can be found below.
If you are interested in taking the Conservation Planning Course but you won’t be able to complete the pre-requisites before July, we are planning to hold this training again in 2022. You can include it as a technical training need in your Individual Development Plan in eLINK, and start working on the pre-requisites now.
The steps to do this are:
- Select the “My Training Needs” tab
- Select “Add New Training Request”
- Select “Other Certification” dropdown
- Type in “Conservation Planning Course: Part 2”
- Press “Save”
If you have questions or need further assistance please reach out to us at: techtraining.bwsr@state.mn.us.
Core Competency Training
As you may recall from past editions, the Core Competency trainings were developed with Minnesota specific information and are designed to provide a foundational knowledge of soil and water conservation to all staff, regardless of position. Since October we have been posting modules for use as they were completed. Today we are excited to announce that module development has been completed, and they are all available for use!
More information, including module titles, links to the site, and instructions on creating accounts and registering for training, can be found on the TTCP’s Core Competency page on BWSR’s website. If you haven’t done so already create an account and check them out today.
