Correcting Inaccuracies in Star Tribune Article

Brooklyn Park, MN—November 6th, 2025—The Minnesota Star Tribune has grossly misrepresented the facts in its recent article written by Andy Mannix, with contributions from Jeff Day and Ryan Faircloth, regarding the critical incident review conducted in response to the officer-involved shooting that took place when Vance Boelter killed Mark Hortman.

On November 4th the Brooklyn Park Police Department released preliminary findings of the critical incident review, indicating officers followed department policy and training standards.

In response to the release, the Minnesota Star Tribune printed an article stating officers “…waited for a drone to be deployed to see if Boelter was inside and if Melissa Hortman was still alive.” This is a gross misrepresentation of the facts.

Officers were unaware of any victims other than Mark Hortman in the home, which was made clear in the original press release. The officers acted swiftly, with courage and bravery in the face of grave danger, based on the information they had at the time.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department reached out to Tom Scheck, an editor with the Minnesota Star Tribune, to point out the inaccuracy. The Minnesota Star Tribune has yet to retract its incorrect reporting.
