Neighborhood inspections—also known as neighborhood sweeps—are designed to connect with residents and promote neighborhood pride and upkeep. By encouraging well-maintained properties, we protect home values and enhance the overall quality of life in our city.
How does it work?
The Environmental Health Division selects eight (8) neighborhoods for proactive inspection, rotating through all neighborhoods citywide every three (3) years. The current neighborhoods are:
- Sunny Lane (finishing from 2024)
- River Park (finishing from 2024)
- Birch Grove
- Bass Creek
- Candlewood
- Central
- Hartkopf
- Monroe
- River North
- Shingle Creek
- Willowstone
If we aren't able to speak to you directly, a door hanger will be left outlining some observations. If any code violations are found, you will also receive a correction notice.
Inspectors encourage residents to voluntarily resolve any issues within a reasonable timeframe. In some cases, additional enforcement may be necessary for non-compliant properties.
Why is this important?
- Shifts away from a complaint-driven system to a more equitable, community-focused model.
- Aligns staff and resources with neighborhood needs.
- Identifies and addresses barriers to compliance before they escalate.
- Promotes early engagement, speeding up compliance.
- Results show increased voluntary compliance rates and limited enforcement actions needed.
- Allows staff to take a customized approach to each unique property and situation.
