Spring into Action with Slow Mow May
Following the success of the No Mow May initiative in 2023, the City Council passed a resolution in January 2024 supporting a rebranded version called "Slow Mow May".
What is Slow Mow May?
As the City continues its efforts to become more pollinator-friendly by implementing best management practices for vegetation, the transition from No Mow May to Slow Mow May was based on resident feedback. Slow Mow May offers a balanced approach, encouraging participants to maintain their lawns at 3-4 inches high to retain soil moisture, sediment, and nutrients, while also crowding out weeds and providing a buffer against summer droughts. Additionally, delaying lawn mowing until later in May benefits pollinators by allowing flowers and other food sources to thrive.
Spring is a critical time for pollinators as it allows them to emerge from hibernation and forage effectively and safely. Reduced lawn mowing conserves natural resources such as gas and water and supports bird reproduction.
