Brooklyn Park, MN (February 13, 2023) – On 2/12/2023 at 3:07 AM, officers of the Brooklyn Park Police Department were dispatched to a report of domestic violence at Cir N, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The female caller reported that she had been choked by her boyfriend and that she may have stabbed him. Responding officers located Ricardo Montrel Pates, a 40-year-old male, in the driveway in critical condition. Pates had a stab wound to his chest. Pates was transported to the hospital where he later died. Pates is believed to be the boyfriend of the 911 caller. Officers, along with detectives, began an extensive investigation into the incident. Detectives interviewed the 911 caller who advised that she was the girlfriend of Pates. She had been holding her 5-month-old child when Pates began to choke her. At one point she became fearful of going unconscious and reached for a kitchen knife, which she swung at Pates in defense of herself. Pates was wounded and fled the house. There is a known history of domestic violence involving both parties and Pates has been arrested for choking the female in the past. The female party was not arrested on scene. This investigation is still on-going with several detectives assigned. Upon completion of the investigation the case will be sent to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for charging consideration.
