Brooklyns Youth Council is in session!

BYC launched successfully on Monday, September 16th, 2019 with 15 of the 26 members in attendance. Brooklyn Center Councilmember April Graves was in attendance and Brooklyn Center City Manager Curt Boganey stopped by to meet the new council, as well. During the meeting, the youth discussed personal power in relationship to their cultures, inherent traits, and family. We also discussed our upcoming schedule and agenda for the next several meetings. Some agenda items include listening/feedback sessions about BrooklynsConnect.org, the Blue Line expansion, and the upcoming Census. We will also hold BYC leadership team elections, a fundraiser (more info below), and swag design.

Prior to the first meeting, we hosted a two-day orientation on August 28th and 29th. The first day of orientation was for BYC members only. The group focused on building community and getting to know each other and ended the day with Whirly Ball. The second day, held over dinner, included parents and family members. We focused on the work and impact of being a BYC member alongside the goals and dreams parents and family members have for their young people.

Youth Council Fundraiser

We have our first fundraiser this Friday, September 27th at Panda Express at Bass Lake Rd and Xerxes Ave (1520 Shingle Creek Crossing, Brooklyn Center, MN 55430).

Anyone who stops by and presents this flyer (either a hard copy or a digital copy) will automatically have 50% of the cost of their meal go to the BYC. The group will decide how they want to use the money to support their potential projects.
