Changes to continuing education (CE) provisions impacting the BOSW and licensees
Change #1: Requires 4 of 40 CE hours in Cultural Responsiveness for all licensees
Amends MS 148E.130, Subd. 1 to require 4 CE hours, of the required 40 total CE hours, at each license renewal, in the new content area of “cultural responsiveness” for all license types, LSW, LGSW, LISW, LICSW
Change #2: Cultural Responsiveness Definition Added
Amends MS 148E.010, Subd. 7f to create new CE content definition, "cultural responsiveness"
"Cultural Responsiveness means increasing the knowledge, understanding, self-awareness, and practice skills that enable a social worker to serve clients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds including:
(1) understanding culture, its functions, and strengths that exist in varied cultures; (2) understanding clients' cultures and differences among and between cultural groups; (3) understanding the nature of social diversity and oppression; and (4) understanding cultural humility."
Change #3: Effective date
Amends MS 148E. 130, subdivision 1b, to specify the effective date for the new 4 CE hours in cultural responsiveness.
License issued prior to July 1, 2021 with expiration date before June 30, 2023: Not required to complete the 4 CE hours in cultural responsiveness for this license renewal.
License issued prior to July 1, 2021 with expiration date June 30, 2023 or later: Must meet the new 4 CE hours in cultural responsiveness.
Initial license issued on or after July 1, 2021: Must meet the new 4 CE hours in cultural responsiveness at license renewal.
