DEA Educational Requirement for DEA Registrants

New DEA training requirements affect all DEA-registered practitioners. A  mandatory one-time eight-hour training requirement of coursework addressing substance use disorders is part of the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act.

Practitioners who complete their next scheduled DEA renewal registration or an initial application on or after June 27, 2023 must check a box  affirming they have completed the training. The eight hours does not need to be completed as a single session.

The Minnesota Board of Dentistry has no cost education available that can satisfy up to 5 hours of the new requirement:

Continuing education courses and courses taught as part of dental school curriculum from the University of Minnesota could go toward satisfying the requirement as long as the credits are regarding treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
