Dental Assistant Recruitment Project

Due to the drastic increase in demand for dental assistants, the Minnesota Dental Association, Minnesota Oral Health Coalition, and the Early Childhood Dental Network came together to create the Dental Assistant Recruitment Project . Based on a very successful program in North Dakota, the Dental Assistant Recruitment Project aims to recruit students to dental assisting by utilizing commercial marketing methods and meeting them in their high schools and on social media. Coincidentally, the dental assisting profession checks almost all of Generation Z’s work-related boxes.  They are more tech savvy than any other generation; they are a generation that tends to look for employers who can offer stability, security, and opportunities for growth; they care about autonomy and independence; and they want their boss to be a coach and invest in them. These and other aspects of a career in dental assisting are the focus of the recruitment initiative. The Dental Assistant Recruitment Project also compares dental assisting to other jobs with similar education requirements, highlighting how dental assisting is a great choice.

The project has been actively trying to engage dentists to recruit and hire high school students to better engage them in the dental profession. The goal is to get them interested in pursuing dental assisting education and a career as a licensed dental assistant.

Guidance Statement on the Use of Unlicensed Dental Assistants

The MDA and the Minnesota Board of Dentistry have collaborated on a guidance statement regarding oversight and other requirements when non-licensed individuals, such as high school recruits, are hired in a clinical setting.  Please access information in the following link:
