2012 Omar Bonderud Human Rights Award Winner –
Bob Peters

The Human Rights Commission will present Bloomington resident, Bob Peters with the 2012 Omar Bonderud Human Rights Award on Monday, December 3 at the Bloomington City Council meeting. 

Bob Peters

Peters, a person with quadriplegia as the result of a shallow-water diving accident in 1964 has been involved in local, state and national activities and numerous organizations that seek to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Most recently he has served on the Bloomington Public Schools Diversity Day Planning Committee and the Disability Employment Awareness Committee.

This award is presented annually to an individual or organization that has made special efforts to ensure human rights for all Bloomington citizens.

Human Services will offer free gift wrapping at Creekside on Friday, December 14 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. in room 100 and Wednesday, December 19 from 4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. in room 110. Please bring your own boxes. Limit 3 gifts per person.

Community Connections at Creekside

Don’t miss Community Connections on Wednesday, December 19 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. at Creekside. Human Services and local non-profit agencies will be available to meet with individuals and families to provide information on their valuable programs and services.

December agencies will include;

  • Community Action Partnership of Suburban Hennepin (CAPSH) - applications and income guidelines will be available for the 2012-2013 Energy Assistance Program. 
  • Good in the Hood - a Bloomington based food shelf will provide an opportunity for people to register to use their food program and will provide information on the mobile dental clinic and student food shelf at Normandale College’s Campus Cupboard.
  • FreePhone MN -Receive a free phone. Bring proof of enrollment on low-income assistance program and a government issued picture ID with current MN address.
  • Human Services - staff will be available to meet those interested in learning about additional resources and services available in the community.

Laughing, Learning and Lunch

Human Services will present a variety of fun lunch events at Creekside Community Center during the month of December.

Tai Chi
Through a series of movement, the ancient Chinese tradition of Tai Chi has proven health benefits. Learn about the history and participate in a group led demonstration.

Thursday, December 6
Ugly Sweater/Shirt Contest
Put on your ugliest sweater or shirt to try and win a prize.

Tuesday, December 11
Birthday Bash
Help us celebrate December birthdays!  Everyone is welcome to come. Enjoy cake and entertainment. Those celebrating their birthday will receive a free birthday bag and photo.

Let's Get Jammin'
Enjoy a performance by the Classic Country Jammers.
