Bloomington, MNThe new Fire Station 4 at 4201 West 84th Street, completed in summer 2023, received an Award of Excellence in January from the Minnesota Construction Association.

CNH Architects designed and Terra Construction built the new station, which is 25,000 square feet and includes three truck bays, office space, a training room, living accommodations and firefighters’ health and safety amenities.

“The new Fire Station 4 allows us to provide better coverage to the community,” said Jay Forster, Bloomington’s assistant fire chief. “Since it opened August 1, 2023, Station 4 crews have responded to nearly 1,400 calls, including one just a few blocks from the new station. With the station staffed 24-hours by full-time and part-time firefighters, the crew and two chiefs were able to arrive on the scene quickly and rescue two people with disabilities who were trapped by the fire. Both people made a full recovery. This is just one example of the benefits of the newly constructed fire station.”

Like most of the City’s six fire stations, Fire Station 4 was first constructed more than 50 years ago. Recognizing the age of the facilities, Bloomington performed a space needs study for each station. Station 4 rose to the top of the list.

“Deb Williams, Bloomington’s assistant maintenance superintendent, and Tim Barrett and Jay Forster with the Bloomington Fire Department were champions for the city and its residents throughout the project,” said Ben Newlin, Terra Construction project executive. “They were fiscally responsible and very thoughtful in the decisions to meet the needs of the community and the Fire Department for the years to come.”

The Minnesota Construction Association (MCA) is nonprofit organization that provides networking, recognition, and education opportunities for the construction industry. Terra Construction submitted the project for award consideration.
