A matter of balance

Concerned about falling? This program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. Learn how to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, learn exercises to increase strength and balance and discover changes you can make to reduce fall risks at home.

This class is part of the Healthy Living as You Age initiative.

The 2017 Poetry contest winners have been announced. Read the winning poem by Willie James Johnson along with other winning and honorable mention entries on the poetry contest page.


Checkmate

Beginning September 13, join the chess group on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. - 12 noon at Creekside Community Center.

This group is open to all, whether you're new to chess, an advanced player or want to brush up on your skills.

Free for all ages, drop in. Limited sets are available, so players are encouraged to bring their own chess set.

    Mondays, September 18 - October 30
    10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
    Creekside Community Center 
    Cost: $35
    For those who don’t think they like the subject! Explore patterns and connections among various branches of elementary mathematics. Bring a pencil, paper and calculator, as mathematics is not learned by osmosis.

  • Mindplay: Allied Deception in WWII
    Thursdays, September 21 - November 9
    12:30 – 2 p.m. at Creekside Community Center. 
    Cost: $40
    Uncover the little-known British covert intelligence contributions that collectively saved many lives, assured Allied successes and ultimately helped restore freedom and liberty to the world. 


Stick it to the flu - get a shot

Bloomington Human Services and Public Health are offering flu shots at Creekside Community Center, 9801 Penn Avenue South.

These clinics are open to all and no appointment is necessary.  Please bring an insurance card or for free shots or let the nurse know if you do not have insurance. Children under 18 must have a parent or guardian present.

  • Wednesday, October 18 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 25 5 – 6:30 p.m.

Fare for All

Fare For All will be at Creekside Community Center on September 20, 12 - 2 p.m.

Packages of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as frozen name brand meat items available at great savings. Pay with cash, credit, debit or EBT/Snap. Watch for the Holiday Pack in November and December.


Fall Colors painting series

September 29 - Painting with Soft Pastels

Students of all skill levels are invited to expand their knowledge of line, shape, shadow, and structure as they explore their use of color through the magic of soft pastels! Learn how to create a composition and bring it to life through color and value!

Explore contrast, highlight and determine how to find a focal point in your work. This class will engage participants in still life rendering and working from captured photographs.

October 13 - Fall Watercolors

Fall is a beautiful and colorful time in Minnesota! Come discover the wonderful world of watercolor painting this fall and learn techniques including brush handling, wet-on-wet techniques, dry techniques, color mixing and other mark-making tricks.

We will create numerous fall-inspired paintings that are beautiful, colorful, and vibrant. Paintings will be created on postcard size paper and 8” x 12” watercolor papers.

October 27 - Fall Leaves – Pen and Ink with Watercolor

Using abstracted drawings of leaves, participants will create colorful pen and ink drawings accented by watercolor painting.

Use design basics, editing a composition, creating texture, black pen and ink drawing techniques, ink wash, and watercolor wash accents.
