Think Differently with Ellie Krug

Ellie Krug

Join the Human Rights Commission and inclusionist Ellen “Ellie” Krug for a two-part presentation on inclusivity and personal perspective-building. This community event will take place Tuesday, June 20, 6 - 9 p.m. (reception at 5:30 p.m.) in the Schneider Theater.

Transgender 101

Hear firsthand from a transgender person on what it means to be "trans" and making one's way through a society that largely doesn't understand the concept of gender identity or the fact that transgender persons don't "choose" to be who they are. Incorporating elements of her own personal story, Ellie offers tips on how to be welcoming as more and more transgender people are "coming out."

Gray Area Thinking™

Understanding how humans group and label those who are "different" from "us" and a toolset for thinking more inclusively. This presentation includes an audience-participatory exercise, "The Identity Game," that can involve everyone from ages 7 on up.

Newly Elected Officers

The Human Rights Commission elected the following officers at its May 15 meeting:

  • Jared Leese, Chairperson
  • Nicholas Jenkins, First Vice Chairperson
  • Savannah Salato, Second Vice Chairperson

Their terms will expire May 2018.


Adult Commissioner Opportunity

Bloomington is seeking applications for an adult commissioner opportunity to serve on the Human Rights Commission. Applicants are appointed by the City Council and must be residents of Bloomington. Applications are available online.


PACER Unity Awards

PACER

Hosted by the Human Rights Commission and PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center, the third annual Unity Awards took place at Bloomington Civic Plaza Thursday, May 25.

Mayor Gene Winstead welcomed 150 guests to Bloomington, and the event was emceed by Mike Agustyniak, chief meteorologist with WCCO Channel 4. The program included an original animated video a reading of a powerful written piece titled Learning to Love Yourself.

Recognizing those who have made outstanding contribution to prevent bullying on a local and national level, awards were presented by Faces of Change - the Youth Advisory Board from PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center.

Award recipients from the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota, New Hampshire, Iowa, California and Michigan were recognized for going above and beyond in uniting against bullying, and uniting for kindness, inclusion and acceptance. 

The Unity Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the passion and commitment of students and community members in bullying prevention, and to highlight the importance of community involvement in taking action to ensure that our communities, schools and workplaces are built on acceptance. 


2017 Omar Bonderud Award

The Bloomington Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for the Omar Bonderud Award. Eligible recipients are individuals and organizations (business, volunteer, or religious groups) that have shown special efforts to ensure citizens of Bloomington equal opportunities in employment, housing, public accommodations, public services, education and/or represent a substantial effort toward educating, winning, or preserving equality and justice for protected groups.
