Minnesota detected the first cases of this highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Since then the response has grown significantly and so have the questions. Here are some of the most common questions we're asked:

How does this year compare to the 2015 outbreak?

• The 2015 outbreak began in early March and the last positive case was in early June. The 2022 outbreak started in late March and it remains unknown how long it will last. Warmer months could spell the end of the outbreak for a couple reasons. The migration season begins winding down, and this strain of influenza virus doesn't appear to be as stable in warmer and drier weather.

What are some of the numbers in this response? (totals as of April 14)

• More than 80 state and federal staff activated in Minnesota.
• Approximately 23,000 birds tested for avian influenza.
• Emergency Operations Center runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days per week.

Why are healthy flocks tested just because they're nearby an infected flock?

• Responders conduct disease surveillance near infected flocks to look for additional cases of avian influenza. This information is important to demonstrate to domestic and international trading partners that we have identified the infection, are controlling the outbreak, and can prove freedom from HPAI when the outbreak ends to resume trade.
