Sheep and goat webinar

Goat Kids

The University of Minnesota Extension will host a webinar on Thursday, February 18 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. about how to get your newborn goat kids and lambs off to a good start in life and keep them growing strong. Farmers, 4-Hers, ag business professionals who work with farmers, and those interested in goats or sheep are invited to attend.

Sheep and Goat production in 2021 begins with tremendous optimism and record or near-record lamb and goat prices. Producers are in the midst of lambing and kidding and this webinar will focus on young lamb/kid management. The time of birth to weaning requires attention to detail, husbandry skills, and emphasis on health and nutrition.

Dr. Travis Hoffman, NDSU/UMN Extension Sheep Specialist, Kyle Rozeboom, UMN Department of Animal Sciences Instructor, and Skip Anderson, NDSU Sheep Unit Shepherd will collaboratively provide guidance for lamb/kid processing, beginning rations, and overall lamb and kid health.

Pre-registration is required. Please register at z.umn.edu/SheepGoatWebinar and you will receive the Zoom link upon registering. If you are unable to attend the live session, you will receive the recording via email. If you have questions, please contact Brenda Miller at nels4220@umn.edu or Colleen Carlson at traxl042@umn.edu.

Cattle disease traceability

Industry stakeholders across the United States recognize the need for a viable end-to-end cattle disease traceability system, which provides critical tools to manage a disease outbreak and may provide opportunities to add value to the industry. In August 2018, CattleTrace Inc. was formally established as a private, not-for-profit corporation to securely maintain and manage the data collected as part of animal disease traceability. Now known as U.S. CattleTrace, this multi-state, industry-driven initiative works to capture minimal data points using RFID technology to use only in the case of disease outbreak. Led by a producer Board of Directors, as well as members from each segment of the beef cattle industry, U.S. CattleTrace continues to work towards a voluntary system that works for the entirety of the industry. To learn more about U.S. CattleTrace or to become a U.S. CattleTrace member, visit www.uscattletrace.org.

Sheep producer input requested

The USDA's National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is seeking stakeholder input to help shape the objectives for an upcoming sheep study taking an in-depth look at the most pressing health issues facing the sheep producers. Interested stakeholders can provide input through March 31, 2021 on this online survey.

Stakeholder input is essential to the success of the Sheep 2023 study. NAHMS encourages all stakeholders to identify the focus and objectives they would like analyzed in this national study.

The NAHMS Sheep 2011 study results are posted online.

Inquiries regarding the survey or NAHMS sheep studies may be sent to NAHMS@usda.gov.
