MI Fellowship Updates
Per Public Act 103 of 2023, the following updates are effective Academic Year 2023-24:
- Students must be enrolled FULL-TIME to utilize the MI Fellowship. This is a change from the previous 24-credit hour requirement in Academic Year 2022-23.
Applicants must ‘Be enrolled in enough coursework to be considered enrolled full-time during the academic year, or its equivalency for individuals enrolled in an alternative certification program.’
- Renewal applicants, must have earned at least 24 credit hours in Academic Year 2022-23, or the equivalent of full-time participation for individuals enrolled in an alternative certification program.
‘Alternative Certification Program’ is defined by the Michigan Department of Education as an approved Michigan alternative route program or an approved post-baccalaureate teacher preparation program for which full-time enrollment is less than 24 credits in an academic year.
- Students must only be admitted into an eligible Educator Preparation Program. No stipulation exists as to admission date. Previously, students must have been admitted into and enroll in the eligible Educator Preparation Program Fall 2022 or after.
- Students must be ‘junior level or above’ to qualify, versus the 2022-23 policy, which stated students must have reached at least 56 earned credit hours.
- Receipt of the MI Fellowship does still include the commitment to teach in Michigan for a specific number of years.
- In 2022-23, recipients were able to teach in a public school, a private school, or a qualifying public preschool program to fulfill their commitment.
- Renewal awards and new 2023-24 applicants will be able to teach in only a public school or qualifying public preschool program in Michigan to fulfill their Commitment to Teach in Michigan.
Note: A 2022-23 recipient would be able to fulfill the required three years of teaching in a Michigan private school. If that student renewed their award for 2023-24, they would be required to then teach one additional year for a total of four years. The first three years of teaching can be in a public school, private school, or qualifying public preschool program in Michigan, but the final year of the commitment must be in a public school or qualifying public preschool program in Michigan.
