Again this year, we are partnering with the Treasury Black History Month Program Committee to not only raise money for the Fostering Futures Scholarship, but to celebrate Juneteenth!
Come out to the Capitol Lawn June 21 from 11:00-2:00 p.m. and join our pizza party. A $10 donation will get you pizza, dessert and a drink. WLNS Sheri Jones will emcee our event filled with live entertainment, speakers, vendors, raffle prizes, and of course--a celebration of Juneteenth. All money raised will go directly to the Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund.
To help estimate the amount of pizza needed, please pre-register to attend the event.
Again this year, "The Pillow Effect," a Michigan Youth Opportunities Initiative (MYOI) program will accept donations of new standard pillows and pillowcases (or cash donations to purchase items) for distribution to youth entering foster care.
Since 2012, Fostering Futures Scholarship fundraising efforts have totaled more than $1,300,000; all of which have been awarded as scholarships in the year they were raised.
If you are unable to attend this year's event please consider making a donation. Your donation, big or small, will make a difference.
Juneteenth Independence Day is celebrated to commemorate the day that slaves were freed in Texas after the Civil War. On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln declared all slaves in confederate states were free, when he signed the Emancipation Proclamation. However, it was not until June 19, 1865, that General Gordan Granger and union soldiers went into Galveston Texas with news that the Civil War was over and that the 250 thousand slaves were free. One June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, which made it a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipating of enslaved African Americans.
