MI Future Educator Stipend
Taxability
Student Scholarships, Grants and Outreach (SSGO) has received confirmation that institutions will need to issue IRS Form 1099s to MI Future Educator Stipend recipients. SSGO is unable to provide any tax advice to recipients regarding how the MI Future Educator Stipend will be reported on the IRS Form 1040 or how to reduce the income from the IRS Form 1099. Recipients will need to consult a tax professional for these answers.
Application Updates
- On May 1, 2023, Fall applicants will be permitted to apply for the MI Future Educator Stipend.
- Spring applicants will be permitted to apply November 1, 2023.
- Summer applicants will be permitted to apply May 1, 2024.
In an effort to avoid errors and applicant follow-ups, separate application periods are necessary and will provide a more efficient process when communicating with school districts while ensuring the student teaching placement is set for students.
Stipend Verification Form
In Academic Year 2022-23, students were required to complete the Stipend Verification Form, with both applicant and school district input. The applicant had to take the form to their school district for completion and then return the form to SSGO.
For Academic Year 2023-24, Education Preparation Programs will be required to verify with the school districts that the student is student teaching at the school district and that the student teacher is not being paid. EPP’s will report this information on behalf of the school district to their institution’s financial aid office prior to the certification process.
Because this is now automated, it is very important that the student lists the correct semester and school district on their MI Future Educator Stipend Applications. Institutions should verify the school district listed on the certification roster is correct when certifying awards.
