Intended Audience: Any local government employee or vendor, including clerks, treasurers, elected officials, finance directors, city, township, or village managers, auditors, accounting staff, certified public accounts and accounting firm that works in the area of accounting, finance, bookkeeping, etc.
The Michigan Department of Treasury provides direction to local governments on accounting and auditing in the form of number letters and Michigan Committee on Governmental Accounting and Auditing (MCGAA) Statements. To ensure this information is most up to date and useful for our trusted partners, we have begun a process of removing or updating the Numbered Letters that go back to 1993 to the present day as well as the MCGAA Statements. Most of the updates will be made to change them to our current format and to refresh links such as those to websites and Michigan statutes. However, many will need to be revised more substantially or even removed from being active. Our goal is to update 20% each year. Our ongoing goal will be to update them every five years to make sure they are maintained adequately.
We will be holding a public comment period for the first 20% of the documents, with the deadline for written comments being August 25, 2022. At the website at the bottom, you will find a table with the documents being updated. There are three versions of each letter, including the version currently in effect, a marked-up version with the suggested changes, as well as final clean version.
Any individual or organization that would like to submit comments should provide those comments in writing to the Michigan Department of Treasury, Community Engagement and Finance Division at lafd_audits@michigan.gov with the subject line entitled “Numbered Letters Exposure Draft.” Alternatively, responses may also be submitted via US postal service to PO Box 30728, Lansing, Michigan 48909-8228.
If you have any questions, please contact our office at 517-335-7469.
