New office to benefit customers, staff

DETROIT The Secretary of State Southwest Detroit PLUS Office will be closed for several days in September as it moves to a new location in a Michigan Department of Transportation Welcome Center, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced today.

Customers and staff will benefit from the customer-friendly upgrades that include a larger lobby, public restrooms, ample parking, new counters, paint and carpeting. The office also will offer 24/7 access to a Self-Service Station, which provides a convenient option for customers renewing their license plate tabs.

The Secretary of State office at 7760 W. Vernor Highway will be closed as of Monday, Sept. 8, and will reopen at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, at 2835 Bagley Ave. in the Plaza Del Norte building. The new location is about 2.5 miles northeast of its existing location with convenient access from Interstates 75 and 96. The Secretary of State office will share the site with a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Welcome Center.

Office hours remain unchanged: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

“The new features of this office and our partnership with MDOT in leasing the space are part of our commitment to continuously improving and providing convenient customer service while being efficient with taxpayer dollars,” Johnson said. “Area residents can now do many transactions with us online at ExpressSOS.com but when they do visit, they can enjoy the benefits of this improved office.”

ExpressSOS.com offers a convenient alternative for renewing license plates, driver’s licenses and state ID cards. Online license plate renewal allows customers to “print-n-go” by printing a copy of their new registration to use until their tabs arrive in the mail. Easy-to-follow instructions can be found with the renewal notice. Additional services can be done online as well.
