LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Secretary of State branches
will be closed in two dozen counties Monday, Jan. 6, due to emergency weather
conditions while branches in other communities are expected to remain open to
serve customers, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said today.
“We are working with local and state agencies to
coordinate our efforts to ensure our customers and staff are safe while also
providing services where we can,” Johnson said. “And we are still open for
business online at ExpressSOS.com for many transactions, including license
plate tabs and driver’s license renewals.”
Branches in the following counties are expected to be
closed on Monday: Berrien, Branch, Cass, Calhoun, Eaton, Hillsdale, Huron,
Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe,
Oakland, St.Clair, St. Joseph, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Tuscola, Van Buren, Washtenaw
and Wayne (except for Detroit Super!Center, 3046 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit, which is expected to remain open).
Before heading to a branch on Monday, customers are
encouraged to use the Branch Office Locator at http://services.sos.state.mi.us/servicelocator/ to
see whether it’s open.
Customers whose license or registration expiration
occurred during Monday’s closure will not be charged a late fee if they renew
as soon as Secretary of State offices reopen. If renewing by mail, any
application postmarked before the expiration date will not be considered late.
Appointments for hearings or driver assessments will be
rescheduled.
The department will continue to provide updates through
news reports and social media channels, including on Twitter (@MichSOS) and
Facebook (facebook.com/MichiganSoS).
