Calling sunshine a great disinfectant, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson this week announced a series of proposals to increase voters' access to candidate campaign contribution records. The announcement comes during National Sunshine Week, which runs through March 16 and promotes open government and freedom of information.

Young Fives and kindergarten pupils at the Fenton School District's Ellen Street Campus - World of Wonder enjoyed having Secretary Johnson as a special guest reader on March 12. With an assist from one of the students in showing pictures, she shared her favorite children's book, "A Fish Out of Water" by Helen Palmer. Johnson is visiting several schools across the state as part of National Reading Month.

Legislation that would allow Secretary of State Ruth Johnson to put a special veteran designation on the driver’s licenses and state IDs of honorably discharged veterans has passed the state House and is moving forward through the Legislature.
Secretary Johnson said she is confident lawmakers will support the bills as a way to say thank you to our nation's heroes and help them get the benefits they have earned and deserve.
Two bills, HB 4037 and HB 4287, have been reported out of the Senate Veterans, Military Affairs & Homeland Security Committee and will now go to the Senate for consideration.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson was pleased to welcome an international women's delegation to her offices last week in Lansing.
The group consisted of 15 women from nine countries in the Near East and North Africa who were visiting Michigan from March 6-9 as part of the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Johnson shared experiences as a female officeholder at the state and local levels and answered questions the delegates had on elections and other issues.
The group's coordinator is Colleen Pero of the Michigan Council on Civilian Diplomacy.
