Transportation Improvement Assoc. presents award at annual meeting
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson was honored by the Transportation Improvement Association at the group’s annual meeting in Novi today for her efforts to promote traffic safety in Michigan.
Johnson was presented with a Transportation Safety Award by TIA Chief Executive Officer Jim Santilli, who expressed appreciation for what she has done to make traffic safety a top priority at the Michigan Department of State.
“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of our great team—the people in our department who have dedicated their careers to saving lives.” Johnson said. “This is their award.”
Under Secretary Johnson’s leadership, the department added or expanded its activities in support of the Michigan Strategic Highway Safety Plan. To promote teen driver safety, the department created a teen driver website at michigan.gov/teendriver that features driver education information, provided The Parent’s Supervised Driving Guide and other materials, engaged student leaders to implement traffic safety programs in schools and other initiatives.
For aging drivers, the department created the Safe Driver, Smart Options website at michigan.gov/agingdriver and provided Michigan’s Guide for Aging Drivers and Their Families and an Alternative Transportation Resource Guide. The CarFit program, which helps to ensure maximum comfort and safety for older drivers in their vehicles, is also promoted at Secretary of State offices.
The department continues to improve the Michigan Rider Education Program and to promote motorcycle safety during May as an awareness month and throughout riding season. It broadcasts traffic safety messaging on the monitors in Secretary of State offices and on social media; participates in numerous traffic safety committtees, workgroups and conferences; and works with many safety partners on publications, campaigns and outreach events.
As secretary of state, Johnson serves as a trustee of the TIA. The organization, one of the leading safety agencies in the world, identifies transportation safety trends that negatively impact society and develops solutions that can be implemented to save lives, prevent injuries and improve mobility.
