Shelby Township holds household hazardous waste collection day for residents
Shelby Township’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is exclusively for GFL Environmental residential customers from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at River Bends Park, 5700 22 Mile Road. Residents should enter the park off 22 Mile Road, between Shelby and Ryan roads.
“This collection day is crucial for maintaining the health and safety of our community and our environment,” Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said. “It’s a great opportunity for residents to easily and responsibly dispose of hazardous materials that cannot be placed in regular trash collection.”
The collection runs 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and recyclers should expect long lines as this event is very popular. Since the event is so popular, the township recommends attending after 10:30 a.m. to reduce your wait and to be in line by 1:45 p.m. to ensure your recyclables are collected.
Accepted items at the event include pesticides, herbicides, oil, gasoline, antifreeze, paint thinner, fire extinguishers, propane cylinders, smoke detectors, cooking oil, car and household batteries, various types of light bulbs, aerosols, and mercury-containing devices. Residents can also dispose of oil-based and latex paints during this collection.
“By participating in this program, residents can directly contribute to the reduction of environmental hazards in our local ecosystem,” said Township Trustee Lucia Di Cicco, who serves on the Solid Waste and Recycling Committee. “It's a practical step towards more ecological living practices in Shelby Township.”
Additionally, residents can bring eyeglasses and pill medications for disposal. Recyclers should remove pills from their original containers and place them in a resealable bag, with the bag placed on the vehicle’s front seat upon arrival. Liquid medications, aerosols and injectables are not accepted. Sharps, such as needles, can be disposed of if sealed in a coffee can or a rigid plastic container.
This event does not accept items such as electronics, explosives, medical or business waste, appliances, tires, ammunition, or general trash.
For further details, residents can download the 2024 Shelby Township Household Hazardous Waste Collection flyer at shelbytwp.org/waste or call the Shelby Township DPW at 586-731-5990.
“We encourage all eligible residents to take advantage of this service to ensure our community remains a safe, clean and better place to live,” Stathakis said. “This event is a key part of Shelby Township’s commitment to being sound environmental stewards and enhancing community safety.”
