Correction: The Incident is on I-196.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office is actively policing a multi-car pile-up on Interstate I-196 near 64th Avenue in Zeeland Township. The incident began at approximately 10:19 a.m. on January 19, 2026. Deputies were dispatched after receiving multiple reports of numerous crashes and slide-offs in the area. This incident also includes several jack-knifed semi-trucks.
There are numerous injuries reported, though none are known to be fatal at this time.
Sheriff's Deputies are working with area ambulance and fire services to treat the wounded and transport them to area hospitals.
The Michigan State Police and Zeeland Police Department are assisting deputies on the scene.
The highway is closed in both directions between the Hudsonville exit of I-196 (62) and the Zeeland exit of I-196 (55). Motorists are encouraged to avoid this stretch of I-196 and to travel only when necessary.
Buses from Hudsonville High School (HHS) and Max Transit are being used to assist OCSO with transporting stranded motorists from the scene to Hudsonville High School. Once at the school, they can summon assistance or schedule a ride to pick them up from the HHS cafeteria.
Motorists currently stranded at the scene should remain inside their vehicles until they can board a bus to Hudsonville High School.
The highway is expected to be closed for several hours during clean-up and removal of vehicles and patients.
