Cold Weather Expected Later This Week. Now Is the Time to Prepare
Ottawa County Emergency Management is monitoring colder weather expected to move into the area later this week. While cold temperatures are common this time of year, preparing ahead of time can help reduce stress and prevent issues if winter conditions impact travel, utilities, or daily activities.
Taking a few steps now can help keep you, your family, and your home safe and comfortable during colder weather.
Steps to prepare your home Cold temperatures can put extra strain on heating systems and utilities. Consider taking the following actions now: • Check that your heating system is working properly and schedule service if needed • Use space heaters safely and keep them well away from curtains, furniture, and other flammable items • Insulate exposed pipes and allow faucets to drip slightly during very cold temperatures to help prevent freezing • Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are working properly
Prepare your vehicle for winter conditions Cold weather can make travel more challenging, even for short trips. Preparing your vehicle now can help keep you safe: • Keep your gas tank at least half full • Check tires, brakes, battery, and windshield washer fluid • Carry an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, a flashlight, food, water, a phone charger, and basic supplies
Have essential supplies on hand Having basic supplies ready can help if travel becomes difficult or if there is a temporary disruption to services: • Several days of food and drinking water • Prescription medications and necessary medical items • Flashlights, batteries, and backup charging options • Warm clothing, blankets, hats, gloves, and sturdy footwear
Check on others and protect pets Cold weather can be especially challenging for older adults, people with medical needs, and those who may have difficulty preparing on their own: • Check in on neighbors, friends, and family members who may need assistance • Make sure pets are brought indoors and have a warm, safe place to stay
Preparing ahead of time helps ensure everyone stays safe as colder weather arrives. Ottawa County Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as needed.
Stay safe and stay prepared.
