A New Year Focus on Community Participation in Emergency Management

As we begin a new year, it is an opportunity to reaffirm that emergency management is not only the responsibility of government agencies. It is a shared effort that depends on informed, prepared, and engaged residents across Ottawa County.

Effective emergency management starts at the community level. When citizens take steps to prepare their households, stay informed, check on neighbors, and understand local risks, our entire county becomes more resilient. Small actions taken by individuals and families before an emergency can significantly reduce impacts during an incident.

In the coming year, our focus will be on strengthening opportunities for residents to participate in emergency preparedness and resilience efforts. This includes expanding public education, encouraging household and family planning, supporting volunteer involvement, and improving how we communicate before, during, and after emergencies.

We want residents to understand that their role matters. Whether it is maintaining an emergency kit, developing a family communication plan, participating in community preparedness activities, or sharing reliable information, citizen involvement is a critical part of protecting lives and supporting recovery.

Emergency management works best when it is built on trust, communication, and shared responsibility. We look forward to continuing this work alongside our residents, community organizations, and local partners as we move into the new year.

Thank you for your commitment to helping make Ottawa County a safer and more prepared place to live.
