Emergency Preparedness Tip: Water Matters

When preparing for emergencies, it is important to think about the basic resources that support daily life. One of the most critical is water. This includes water for drinking and water used for sanitation.

Drinking Water
Every household should keep a reserve of potable drinking water. A good starting point is at least two cases of bottled water, with more if space allows. Store water in a cool location away from direct sunlight. Plan to rotate your supply about once a year by using and replacing it. If normal water service is interrupted, having drinking water on hand provides comfort, safety, and peace of mind.

Water for Toilets
After drinking water, sanitation is often the next concern. Many people do not realize that most modern toilets can be flushed manually. You can do this by filling the toilet tank with water and using the handle as usual, or by pouring water directly into the bowl.

An often overlooked source of water for this purpose is your home hot water tank. Many tanks hold thirty gallons of water or more. Near the base of the tank is a drain valve. Manufacturers often recommend using this valve once a year to partially drain the tank as part of routine maintenance, which also helps keep the valve in working condition.

A standard garden hose can usually be attached to the drain valve. Place the other end of the hose into a bucket, open the valve, and collect the amount of water needed, such as one and a half to two gallons. That amount is typically enough to flush a toilet.

Important Safety Note
Water from a hot water tank can be very hot. If you plan to use this method during an emergency, turn off the heating source to the tank first, such as switching off the electric breaker. Once normal water service is restored and the tank has refilled, the heating source can be turned back on.

Thinking through these options during calm times helps build self sufficiency during emergencies. Water is essential to life, and having a plan and a small reserve is strongly recommended.

Being prepared brings confidence and control when it matters most.
