Many people visit the Clerk/Register of Deeds Office for common services such as obtaining a birth or death certificate, election information, recording land documents, or requesting court records. But that’s just part of what we do!
The Ottawa County Clerk/Register of Deeds also serves as the official clerk to several of the County’s boards, including the Board of Commissioners. In this newsletter series, we’ll take a closer look at the boards we support and what our role entails.
As the official Secretary to the Board of Commissioners, our office is essential in promoting transparency and accountability in local government by documenting, preserving, and maintaining accurate public records for all official Board actions.
Our responsibilities include:
- Attending and publicly posting all Board and committee meetings in compliance with open meeting laws;
- Preparing and preserving permanent minutes of those meetings;
- Managing official correspondence on behalf of the Board of Commissioners; and
- Ensuring the public has access to meeting records upon request.
Stay tuned as we continue this series to highlight the other boards we serve and the important behind-the-scenes work that supports effective county governance.
