Labor Day Weekend Safety Tips

Hi Ottawa County friends,

With Labor Day right around the corner on Monday, September 1, 2025, we want you to enjoy the long weekend safely and responsibly. To help make that happen, here's your complete safety guide for the upcoming holiday:

1. Water Safety — Beaches, Lakes, and Pools

  • Many of our residents will head to Lake Michigan or inland lakes. Always swim near lifeguarded areas and comply with warning flags.

  • Keep an eye on children and weak swimmers at all times.

  • Life jackets save lives—especially on boats or when swimming in rough waters. Make sure they're properly fitted.

  • Don’t underestimate currents—even calm-looking waters can have strong pull afterward.

Water Safety

2. Boating & Recreation

  • File a float plan or tell someone where you'll be and when you'll be back.

  • Life jackets aren’t just for kids—everyone on board should wear one whenever the engine is running.

  • Avoid alcohol when operating a boat or paddlecraft—it’s as dangerous as driving impaired.

  • Check your vessel’s maintenance, fuel, and safety gear before heading out.

Boat Safety

3. Heat & Thunderstorms

  • Heat waves and sudden storms can surprise us even in early September. Weather can shift quickly.

  • Dress in light, breathable clothing; protect yourself with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

  • Keep cool by drinking plenty of water and seeking shade when possible.

  • If thunderstorms pop up, pause your outdoor plans immediately and shelter indoors—especially if you hear thunder.

4. Road Safety

  • Plan for heavier traffic—especially on I-196, US-31, and roads leading to beaches and parks. Leave early and give yourself extra time.

  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up, especially youngsters in proper car seats or boosters.

  • Stay focused on the road. Don’t text, scroll, or drive while distracted.

  • Plan rest stops if you’re heading out for a longer drive—fatigue can sneak up fast.

5. Fire Safety & Grilling

  • Before firing up the grill, make sure it's placed on a flat surface and kept away from structures or overhanging branches.

  • Never leave the grill unattended—and keep kids and pets a safe distance away.

  • Have a fire extinguisher or garden hose handy, just in case.

  • Properly extinguish coals before disposing of them—never drop hot coals in the trash!

6. First Aid & Emergency Preparedness

  • Accidents happen—keep a well-stocked first-aid kit nearby at home, by the water, or in your vehicle.

  • Know where your nearest urgent care or emergency facility is located—don’t wait until you're on the road to figure that out.

  • Save Ottawa County’s emergency management phone line in your contacts for quick access if needed.

First Aid

7. Enjoy Responsibly

  • Go out and make the most of this holiday—just be aware, prepared, and cautious.

  • If you spot anything unsafe—overcrowded areas, unguarded water access points, or suspicious activity—please report it to local authorities.

  • Let’s look out for one another and make this Labor Day weekend fun and safe.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and safe Labor Day!
