Ottawa County Residents Should Prepare for Upcoming Heat

Ottawa County Cooling Centers
Ottawa County, (MI) The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch beginning Saturday (6/21/25) and ending Tuesday night (6/24/25). Some areas in Ottawa County will have daytime temperatures reaching the low 90’s, with higher heat indexes due to humidity levels. As a result, cooling centers have been opened in Ottawa County to give some relief to those who need it.
Locations include:
In Holland, The Gateway Men’s Center and the Gateway Women and Children’s Center will be open for unsheltered individuals and families. Due to the expected heat, the cooling centers will be open during the day through Monday, June 23. If you or someone you know needs a cool place to escape the excessive heat, please direct them to Gateway Mission. Gateway Mission will offer Emergency Cooling Centers from 8 AM to 8 PM, beginning on Saturday, June 21.

Additionally, anyone in need of overnight emergency shelter is encouraged to check in and stay at Gateway Mission during these hazardous conditions.
- Unsheltered individuals who wish to stay past 8 PM will be welcome to check into our Open Door emergency shelter.

All individuals who do not pose a threat to others are welcome to check in. This includes individuals who may have recently left the mission and are currently living without shelter or do not meet our residency requirements.
- People experiencing homelessness will be strongly encouraged to remain indoors until the “Code Red” has ended.
- Open Door guests will be allowed to stay in the lounge during the day.

Over the next few days, it’s important to remember to stay hydrated with non-alcohol drinks such as water and spend as much time as possible in the shade or in a temperature-controlled environment. Please also remember your pets. Bring them inside to cooler temperatures or supply them with shade, in an unconfined space with plenty of air flow, and lots of cool water.
