The Citizen Police Academy increases the awareness and understanding of law enforcement’s role in the community. The nine-session program is offered annually, giving an inside look at law enforcement to 25 citizens. Topics include

- Correctional Facility & Tour
- Central Dispatch & Tour
- Undercover Investigations & Narcotics
- Marine Patrol & Dive Team Duties
- K9 Patrol Duties & Demonstration
- Crisis Intervention Team
- Criminal Scientific Support Unit & Crime Scene Investigation
- Use of Force Explanation & Demonstrations
- Firearms, Range & Simulator
- Special Operations
- Criminal Justice Legal System
- Accident & Fatal Accident Investigations
- Community Policing
Submit your application now for the 2025 Citizen Police Academy. Sessions are scheduled every Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm throughout May and June. Attendees should not miss more than one session.
Candidates for the Citizen Police Academy must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum age of 18
- Live or work in Ottawa County
- No misdemeanor arrests within one year of application
- No prior felony arrests
Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Pending a background check and eligibility, applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the academy in April. Only 25 will be accepted.
