Post-Election Audits Results
February 27, 2024 Presidential Primary Race
As discussed last month, post-election audits ensure the integrity and accuracy of procedures before, during, and after an election. The Michigan Secretary of State's office selects all precincts to be audited at random.
The audit process utilizes a 77-point checklist and includes a hand count of ballots. This checklist includes verification that election workers were trained and both major parties were represented, equipment was tested and counted ballots accurately, applications to vote were completed and matched the number of ballots cast, and that ballots and election materials were sealed and stored properly. The hand count of ballots ensures that the number of physical ballots matches the number of ballots cast on Election Day as well as a comparison of results from the totals tape printed on Election Night.
The following Ottawa County precincts were randomly selected by the Michigan Secretary of State:
- Holland Charter Township, Pct. 7
- City of Zeeland, Pct. 3
- Allendale Charter Township, Pct. 2
- City of Hudsonville, Ward 2, Pct. 1
- City of Grand Haven, Pct. 1
Each category of procedures is rated with a letter grade. An 'A+' means all precincts followed procedures correctly. A 'B' means there is room for improvement. Anything lower will be addressed with Local Clerks and in future trainings.
Takeaways from the February 27, 2024 Presidential Primary Race Audit:
Our Local Clerks and Election Workers accomplished an extremely accurate and successful election! We are very appreciative of the hard work they put into the election and could not do this without their dedication to democracy.
We will report our findings to the Secretary of State's office and also use the results of the audit as a chance to review and update our training process.
Property Fraud Alerts
Property fraud occurs when someone records a fraudulent document in the county land records office to make it look like they own your home or property.
Property Fraud Alert is a free notification service that alerts subscribers any time a document is recorded that includes their name. This quick alert process can give them a head start if fraudulent activity is being committed against their property.
Once you have signed up for alerts, please take note that you will receive an automated message every time a document is recorded under the name you’ve registered. If you are not expecting the notification or do not recognize the documents listed, you will have the information needed to call the Register of Deeds office and investigate the recording. Individuals with common names may receive notifications for their own recordings as well as notifications for other same-named individuals in the system.
To sign up for free alerts please click here. You will be able to select how you are notified either by text, call, or email.

Clerk/ROD Bring Your Kid to Work Day
It’s been a tradition in our office to celebrate Bring Your Kid to Work Day. This year we had fourteen eager ‘junior deputies’ who participated and job shadowed their parents.
During their visit our 'junior deputies' were able to learn about county governance, local elections, the role of the sheriff's office in regards to regional safety and even took the first children's tour in the new Family Justice Center Courthouse!
We cannot thank the departments enough that participated in welcoming our ‘junior deputies’ and teaching them all about Ottawa County!
We want to hear from you!
The Clerk/Register’s office is dedicated to serve you, and it is our mission to ensure that you leave our office having had a good interaction no matter the outcome. If you had an interaction with our office recently, we' love to get your feedback. Your comments will help us improve our service and better tell our story. Please submit your feedback here.
