The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 988 is the new designated three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the Lifeline for support. 988 is active across the United States. The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential mental health support for people in distress. By calling, texting or chatting 988, individuals will have the opportunity to talk to a trained Lifeline Counselor who will listen, and provide support and resources, if necessary.
Anyone with the following concerns can call 988:
- Mental health-related distress
- Thoughts of suicide
- Substance use crisis
- Emotional distress
There are specialized services available for veterans, individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, people in minority groups, youth and more. People who are concerned about a loved one and need support can call the lifeline as well. For local mental health resources, visit Ottawa County's Suicide Prevention Coalition website.
The Lifeline's network of over 200 crisis centers has been in operation since 2005 and works to improve crisis services, prevent suicides and build awareness of mental health needs through all stages of life. The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-272-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis. The Lifeline is also available in Spanish.
