Have you heard about the upcoming road work on Lakewood Boulevard in Holland and Park townships?
The Holland Board of Public Works (BPW), Holland Charter Township, and the Ottawa County Road Commission will be completing improvements along Lakewood, between Lakeshore Drive and North River Avenue, during the 2022 construction season.
Here is a summary of work that each agency will be completing as a part of this project:
- The Road Commission will widen Lakewood Boulevard, between Division Avenue and Aniline Avenue, and install new curb and gutter, and storm sewer.
- The Road Commission will resurface Lakewood Boulevard, between Lakeshore Drive and 144th (Division) Avenue, and between Aniline Avenue and North River Avenue.
- Holland BPW will install a new 36-inch water transmission main in Lakewood Boulevard and North River Avenue.
- Holland Township will replace existing water main and storm sewer in Lakewood Boulevard.

By law, road agencies can enact weight restrictions on any roads not designed as “all season” roads.
All season roads are much thicker and designed to allow trucking year-around.
The Road Commission employs a weighmaster for enforcement of seasonal weight restrictions on county roads.
Weight restrictions lower axle loading limits and reduce maximum travel speeds for certain vehicles.
The Road Commission must strike a balance between “business as usual” and protecting the roads when determining to implement seasonal weight restrictions.
Most of the roads in Ottawa County are seasonally restricted. Efforts are made to coordinate restrictions with neighboring counties.
Why do we have seasonal weight restrictions?
Road damage caused by heavy vehicles during winter and spring thaw periods is a problem that affects all northern states.
Unless a roadway has been designed and constructed for heavy vehicle loads year-round and designated to be an "all season" road, a significant loss of pavement strength occurs during a seasonal thaw.
The damage to a road is directly related to the amount and frequency of the loading applied. Michigan law provides that the months of March, April and May are automatically reduced loading months, but the statute also allows the Road Commission to implement those restrictions earlier, or suspend reduced loading, depending upon the weather and road conditions.
Be sure to visit our website and the County Road Association's Seasonal Weight Restrictions website for the latest info and updates on seasonal weight restrictions.

The 2021 Ottawa County Water and Wastewater Rate Survey is now available on the Ottawa County Road Commission's website under the “Planning & Reports” section.
The rate survey contains the final water and wastewater rates charged to customers effective on December 31, 2021, for Ottawa County communities.
Since each municipality updates their rates on varying schedules throughout the year, the report reflects the rates that were in place near the end of 2021 to provide the best comparison between water and wastewater systems operating in Ottawa County.
The information in this report is updated at the end of each calendar year.

The Ottawa County Road Commission is pleased to name Dan Karle from the Grand Haven maintenance facility as its Employee of the Quarter recipient for the fourth quarter of 2021, which consists of the October-December period.
Dan was nominated for Employee of the Quarter by several employees for going above and beyond his daily duties.
Of note was Dan’s willingness to step up to the plate and take on a second shift position when the operations department was looking for a new mechanic to fill the second shift position.
According to his coworkers, Dan has a big heart and gets along with everyone, and works hard and takes his job with the OCRC seriously.
The OCRC appreciates Dan for all his hard work and dedication. Dan’s willingness to take on this second shift position without being asked, in addition to his good attitude and dedication to his job, is worthy of him being named Employee of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2021!
