A Home For the Holidays:
Adoption Day with Ottawa County 20th Circuit Court

There is no place like home for the holidays. Celebrating Adoption Day on November 20, the 20th Circuit Court Family Division will ensure not just a home for the holidays but a forever home for several Ottawa County children. At 9AM, ceremonies will begin followed by confirmation hearings with Judges Mark A. Feyen and Kent D. Engle presiding. (Location: 12120 Fillmore Street, West Olive)

Held on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving each year, Adoption Day has become holiday tradition to highlight the importance of adoption and the needs of children in foster care. In Ottawa County, year-to-date adoptions have increased 22.6% compared to this time period in 2017.

At any given time, approximately 13,000 children are in foster care in Michigan. About 2,400 of these foster children will go on to be adopted. Of those, 2,100 kids have an identified adoptive family, leaving 300 children in need of a forever home. On average, 51 percent of children were adopted by their foster parents, 40 percent of children were adopted by relatives, and 9 percent of children were adopted by a recruited family. Adoption Day is an opportunity to encourage families to step forward and take on the very important role of a foster or adoptive parent.

Post-adoption services and, in some cases, financial assistance is available to offer adoptive families the support they need for this transition.
