Shay selected as Deputy Ottawa County Administrator

After wading through a pool of 118 applicants, Ottawa County Administrator Al Vanderberg announced today that John Shay has been selected to serve as the next Deputy County Administrator.

“We are thrilled to have John Shay join the Ottawa County Team,” said Vanderberg. “John’s many successful years in municipal management will serve the County well.”

John Shay is currently the Ludington City Manager, where he has served for 15 years. Shay also served as Village Manager of Almont for the five-years prior. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Boston College and Master of Public Administration from Oakland University. He is currently the Vice-President of the Michigan Municipal Executives.

“I am very excited to begin work as Ottawa County’s next Deputy County Administrator and to join a dedicated team of public servants, providing excellent public services in a cost-effective manner,” said Shay.

Football fans have likely seen John on the field, where he officiates games for both the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. John and his wife, Carla, have three children. (Bethany, Evan, and Molly)

John Shay replaces former Deputy County Administrator Keith Van Beek who left in April to become the Holland City Manager. Shay will begin his duties as Deputy County Administrator on July 23. The position pays $123,468.
