Join us for a Thought-Provoking Series on Sustainable Transportation and Innovative Community Design

Be inspired! Join us on March 12 and 13 at the Sustainable Transportation and Innovative Community Design Series that will be held in the City of Holland. Attendees will explore topics related to walkability, sustainable transportation, community design, placemaking, and how to make great site plans. This Series will feature nationally-acclaimed speaker and transportation expert, Ian Lockwood.

Ian Lockwood, P.E. specializes in making communities more walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly. Ian is recognized for his work as the City Transportation Planner for West Palm Beach, Florida, where he played a large role in transforming the mostly blighted City into a vibrant community.

“We are excited for this event for a number of reasons,” said Elisa Hoekwater, Transportation Program Manager for the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council (MACC), “Ian is inspirational, innovative, and relatable.  He has a wealth of first-hand knowledge on transportation and community design topics that can be applied to both large urban areas and smaller communities.”

The Sustainable Transportation and Innovative Community Design Series will kick off on Monday, March 12th at 6:00 pm with a pizza dinner held at New Holland Brewing Company. During this casual evening with Ian, attendees will learn about walkability, social and economic change, and transforming streets into people and business-friendly places. Attendees will also have the opportunity to speak with Ian about projects or challenges in their community.

The Series will continue on Tuesday, March 13th at the Hope College Maas Auditorium. Attendees will receive a delicious breakfast while they learn about modern transportation language, how to recognize and address competing transportation concepts, and how to create authentic character in their communities. The workshop-style afternoon session is designed to be a hands-on experience in which attendees will receive advice and recommendations from Ian on how to make great site plans and more walkable and bicycle-friendly communities.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, the cost is $20 for the pizza dinner and $40 for the all-day Tuesday event.  And, for those looking to sharpen and/or maintain their skills, attendees are also eligible to receive up to 5 AICP certification maintenance credits. This Series is brought to you as a result of a collaboration between the MACC, Ottawa County Department of Public Health, and Ottawa County Planning and Performance Improvement Department.  This Series is sponsored by the MACC, Ottawa County Department of Public Health, City of Holland, Nederveld, Holland Engineering, Prein & Newhof, Lakeshore Advantage, West Coast Chamber of Commerce, Ottawa County, Congress for the New Urbanism, Williams & Works, and Holland In Bloom.
