February is National Condom Month
Respect - Consent - Confidence to Wear One
It’s about respect & responsibility for you & your partner!
Respect: Consent to have sex can be given or removed at any time. Responsibility: Confidence to decide before having sex to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Not having sex is the best way to keep from getting STIs, but if you choose to be sexually active, using condoms correctly and consistently is a key way to reduce risks. Don’t be shy to talk with your partner about safer sex and condoms. For both of you, this is one of the most important conversations you can have. It’s also one of the smartest!
Free Wear One condom packages are available at participating locations throughout Ottawa County (including by mail) and across Michigan. The Wear One program was developed by the Ottawa County Department of Public Health to increase free condom availability, create awareness and promote acceptance of condom use in people18 - 24 years of age. The goal is to decrease STIs and unplanned pregnancies by removing barriers such as cost, embarrassment and lack of access. To find locations where free condoms are available, visit www.miOttawa.org/WearOne.
"As we work to eliminate barriers to sexual health services in Allegan and Ottawa County, we launched a condoms-by-mail program to do just that. Now, people wanting to protect themselves from unplanned pregnancy and STIs have choices in where and how they get their condoms," said Heather Alberda, AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator with the Ottawa County Department of Public Health.
