Now that we are a month into the New Year, and I have three months here in the Film Office under my belt, I wanted to reach out and give you a quick update on what’s been happening here in the Michigan Film Office and some of our plans for the coming year.
The most obvious change may be the new Film Office logo. We are rolling out this new logo today across our platforms, including the website, our Facebook page, Twitter and our iPhone app. The Pure Michigan brand stands not only for our abundant natural beauty, but also growth and opportunity here in the state – all things that are integral to our efforts in the Film Office. As we work collaboratively with our colleagues here at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation on a range of projects, incorporating Pure Michigan into our logo is a logical next step. Let us know what you think!
I know though that what people really want to hear about are the projects coming to Michigan this year. We are looking forward to 2013 and anticipate a strong slate of projects from across the spectrum will be filming here in Michigan. Several exciting announcements will be coming very soon.
Also, we are on track to spend our full budget for Fiscal Year 2013. As part of that, we have begun aggressive efforts to attract post-production and digital media projects – especially video games – to Michigan. The Film Office will have a booth at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco at the end of March. This will be the first time the Film Office has had a significant presence at the show and we will be using this as an opportunity to highlight Michigan’s assets – from incentives to infrastructure and talent – to this key industry.
Our outreach efforts to the film industry are continuing as well. I recently was out at Sundance Film Festival, as well the Art House Convergence Conference, where I had some terrific meetings with a number of producers and other industry folks. I also participated in a webinar with my colleagues from film offices in New York, California, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. I took this as an opportunity to highlight all of the benefits Michigan offers projects coming to our state. The Film Office also placed a full page ad in the official Sundance Film Festival catalogue to ensure we had a visible presence at the festival. It was a very busy, but productive trip and an important opportunity to tell Michigan’s story.
I’m ending today on a bittersweet note. Mike Grabemeyer will be leaving the Film Office after five years to serve as the Director of Media Production for the Michigan House Democrats. Mike’s last day with the Film Office will be February 13. Tony Garcia is on point to take the lead on all locations requests and website questions moving forward. We will miss Mike’s talent and experience a great deal, but we wish him all the best as he embarks on this new opportunity.
We are looking forward to a busy year here in Michigan, and I hope to have a chance to meet and talk with more of you in the coming months.
Sincerely,
Margaret O’Riley Director
